Applying microfoundations perspectives to address timely and important, locally embedded and globally intertwined complex Grand Challenges, such as environmental sustainability or social development. This Call for Papers particularly invites research that applies a microfoundations perspective to stimulate new ideas and solutions to these challenges.

Digitalization and developing AI pose interesting challenges, potential disruptions, and an increasing need for organizational transformation. What can a microfoundations perspective add to our understanding of future relationships between machines and individuals?

Theoretical papers addressing how microfoundations research can capture implications from different contexts and levels to provide a deeper understanding of central, complex and continuing IB challenges.

Microfoundations in the MNE

Can a microfoundations perspective help us to better understand organizational phenomena? How can it improve our understanding of how managers respond to organizational dilemmas or Grand Challenges?

What are the microfoundations of MNE organizational culture? How do local micro-cultures across geographical locations and functions of the organization provide the foundations for core elements of an MNEs culture?

How do MNEs respond to digitalisation? What are the new business models in response to emerging technological developments and how are these managed?

How do subsidiary managers' micro activities, practices, and processes across the MNE lead to organizational strategy implementation? What are the microfoundations of MNE political engagement and conflicts in strategy implementation?

How do the activities of managers within MNEs vary in terms of their individual capabilities and skills? To what extent can human resource management strategies utilize an understanding of the relationships between micro and firm-level outcomes within the MNE?

What are the microfoundations of MNE decision-making and how do they shape the MNEs’ strategic decisions, such as international expansion or external partner choice?

Microfoundations perspectives on managerial action

How can a microfoundations perspective help us understand how managers can balance the often conflicting demands of sustainability and resilience in IB contexts?

What can a microfoundations perspective add to strong (wo)man or other cross-cultural and global leadership theories?

How do the micro activities and interactions of individuals, teams, or other micro/meso-level factors result in macro-level outcomes in cross-border settings?
