Recent economics and financial issues and policy suggestions in China

As the second largest economy in the world, China experienced significant economic growth slowdown and other challenges in recent years. These challenges range from low GDP growth rate (single digit economic growth), difficult international trade relationship (tensed trade relationship with USA and other mature economies), asset prices (such as housing market collapse), rising unemployment, environmental issues, among others. In recent years, the Chinese government attempts to address these challenges in several fronts by monetary, fiscal, or regulatory policies (Alfaro et al., 2020; Ciravegna & Michailova, 2022; Contractor, 2022; Ding et al., 2021; Li et al., 2020; Ramelli & Wagner, 2020). However, the magnitudes of these challenges, effectiveness of government policies to deal with the challenges, and responses from different economic agents (firms, individuals, or other constituents) to the challenges remain research questions.The proposed special issue solicits high quality research to draw attention of the general public on the complex economic and finance issues in a large emerging market in post-COVID 19 eras. We expect the answers to the challenges offer lessons to other emerging markets as to assessment and response to economic and financial challenges.
